survivorship overview

survivorship medical care - comprehensive and personalized - for all

When we started ten years ago, personalized, comprehensive, post-treatment medical care for breast cancer survivors did not exist. Today, thanks to your help, Back in the Swing is more than Retail Therapy! In our first decade, we met our goal of establishing model programs of personalized medical care for Kansas City's breast cancer survivors in communities across America:

kansas city

Our first grants provided the seed funds to establish and test models of survivorship programs in our hometown, Kansas City:

  • Breast Cancer Survivorship Center at the University of Kansas Cancer Center
  • The "Now What!?" Survivorship Center at North Kansas City Hospital Northland Cancer Center
  • Time to Heal, Shawnee Mission Medical Center
  • Saint Luke's Cancer Institute
  • Truman Medical Center
  • Cancer Action
  • Turning Point

The institutions form our Kansas City Back in the Swing Working Group, which also includes St. Joseph Medical Center and Gilda's Club.

throughout the usa

Just as we provided the seed funds to launch seven survivorship programs in Kansas City, our national retail therapy events helped provide seed dollars to support the nursing services and care-planning for survivors at the SUCCEED Breast Cancer Survivorship Center at the Lynn Sage Cancer Center at Northwestern University Medical Center. SUCCEED exemplifies the growing number of Breast Cancer Survivorship Centers that are leading the way in making personalized cancer survivorship care the expectation, the the exception,, for every breast cancer survivor Back in the Swing promotes the Breast Cancer Survivorship Centers across the country that are offering personalized, multi-disciplinary, medical, post-treatment survivorship care. now our new dream is to make survivorship care available for everyone, wherever they live...

on the professional side

Back in the Swing's support of clinical survivorship care and academic medical research, are both contributing to the development of education for oncology nurses through a new curriculum called "Cancer Survivorship Training for Healthcare Professionals". A result of the collaboration of leaders in the field of survivorship, it will educate oncology nurses and healthcare providers everywhere, so that survivorship care can be accessed wherever primary cancer care exists. Our goal is to train thousands of oncology nurses and other providers over the next five years.

on the consumer side

we are introducing fabulous, empowering, informative recipes for everyday living, through the creation of a new, national one-of-a-kind Back in the Swing Everyday Lifestyle Cookbook, to be published by Andrews McMeel Publishing in Fall 2012. More than a cookbook, it will share the essentials of what every breast cancer survivor needs at her fingertips every day, from recipes to research, to help take care of herself and demand the best care from her healthcare providers.
