Back in the Swing Benefit Parties will Celebrate Survivorship Medical Care and Education

(Kansas City, August 2011) Back in the Swing is celebrating the start of its second decade with Back in the Swing Parties. The party theme, "Cause for Celebration", will focus on the survivorship medical care that is now available, thanks to programs and education Back in the Swing has helped fund over the last eight years.

To spread their message, Back in the Swing has expanded participation beyond retailers to individuals and companies. The Back in the Swing Shopping Card is no longer needed to join in the celebration.

Donations raised will help reach the goal of providing access to cutting-edge, survivorship education for local oncology nurses, endorsed by The Oncology Nursing Society, Kansas City Chapter, as well as clinical care and research. 100% of the funds raised in Kansas City will stay in Kansas City.

"The growth of parties held by individuals, retailers and corporations for Back in the Swing in 2010 revealed a new opportunity to raise funds and more effectively build awareness for the survivorship services and education we helped to establish," according to Back in the Swing Founder, Barbara Unell. "To build on this success and complete our transition from a shopping fund-raiser to a national organization, we decided to work with a select group of retailers, companies and individuals who are committed to sharing our message."

To host a party, individuals, retailers and companies are invited to register online at www.BackintheSwing.org. A volunteer Party Coach will contact the host to help with promotion, brainstorm ideas and provide education materials.

When a party host raises $500 or more, the host will receive a complimentary copy of the upcoming Back in the Swing Everyday Lifestyle Cookbook, to be published in fall of 2012 by Andrews McMeel Publishing. The public is invited to the Back in the Swing Kick-off Party celebrating the "groundbreaking" of the new cookbook to be held at Dean & Deluca in Leawood, Kansas, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, on October 1, 2011.

Back in the Swing USA is the first and only national nonprofit organization exclusively providing grassroots awareness, education and fundraising on behalf of the millions of breast cancer survivors to empower them to get back in the swing of life physically, emotionally and spiritually. Our first grants provided the seed funds to establish and test models of survivorship programs in our hometown, Kansas City:

  • Breast Cancer Survivorship Center at the University of Kansas Cancer Center
  • The "Now What!?" Survivorship Center at North Kansas City Hospital Northland Cancer Center
  • Time to Heal, Shawnee Mission Medical Center
  • Saint Luke's Cancer Institute
  • Truman Medical Center
  • Cancer Action
  • Turning Point

These institutions form the Kansas City Back in the Swing Working Group, which also includes St. Joseph Medical Center and Gilda's Club.
